I have not also died

OK, it's time to quit sitting shiva for Estelle Getty. But I have to go to bed so just a quick hello.

All's well here. Upcoming posts will include photos from whale watching and my trip to Denver. Work has decided to turn my schedule upside down for a couple of months. It's testing my fortitude. I'm working for a very cheerful gentleman and am snarling at him a lot.

I did however just restore the tissues with my annual viewing of "Last of the Mohicans." I now think the original theatrical release is better. It's not about the Clannad or lack thereof -- it's really the edited-out wisecracks that bug me on the U.S. DVD. When Duncan roars "I'll have you beaten from this fort!" it really doesn't make sense for Nathaniel to just stand there and gaze at him. Still, the sound/image quality are magnificent, and Chingachgook (pronounced "Chicago")'s bonus monologue leaves me completely verklempt every time. "Once we were here." I may watch it again tomorrow. I still can't fucking find Colm Meaney. I'm upping the reward to a beer and a shot of whisky.

You should totally come down for a LotM viewing but my stupid cheap-as-dirt DVD player is all busted up right now. My guess is it was a war party. They're moving fast...

I just looked up who Colm Meany is on Wikipedia and he's *totally* in the movie. One of the British soldiers, but I can't remember which one. When Christy asks me why I'm watching this damn movie again instead of sleeping tonight, I'm blaming you.

No no no, I *know* he's in the movie, and I totally know what he looks like, and I know the name of the character he plays -- he's one of the British soldiers -- but Christ help me if I can make him out anywhere at all. It was seriously about a decade before I even made out which soldier was Pete Postlethwaite, and I was a big fan of his from "Romeo + Juliet" (that stuffy old conjunction is the first thing to go) and "In the Name of the Father," which both came out around the same time as "Mohicans." He's there, it's just that you can't really see him, which is crazy because he is a) famous and b) distinctive-looking.

My guess is that Colm Meaney (who also meets qualifications a and b) is in the movie, but Michael Mann positioned him just behind a tree, because it is that kind of movie.

*deep breaths.* I've looked for him. I have.

Tools... clothes... DVD players... everything was inside. They didn't take anything...

Hrm, go watch the first here-we-go-a-marching-through-the-woods-ARGH! scene again. As Magua turns around to walk back and chop up oblivious soldier I think it's the first fellow who sort of turns and looks confused. He's leading the line.

He's also a bit blurry (lens focused on Magua? Too much bourbon? Who can tell?), but that's my guess. As Christy noted, "this game is hard when they all dress the same and wear wigs."

I have just woken up the entire apartment complex guffawing over the phrase "here-we-are-a-marching-through-the-woods-ARGH!" I will try that! I always focus on the poor choppee-to-be who smiles at Magua...he's one of my favorite people in the movie. He's probably Kenneth Branagh or something; Michael Mann is crazy.

Thank you for ye hotte tippe! Did you really watch the movie? Please apologize to Christy for me.

I didn't get through the whole thing, but she was trying to read for work (some kind of mandatory fun in the form of a work book club) which is difficult to do since that faces the TV. So she joined in the Where Is Colm Meany fun.

I agree that choppee-to-be really steels that scene. He's so friendly! Who could ever not like the jolly English soldiers?

He's jolly, but he's probably a slave to his woman. Still, I bet he understands English very well!

I'll look for Colm tonight. My DVD situation is a bit complicated due to not having a remote control, and so being limited to "Play" and "Stop" in terms of functions.

Damn, Ardenstone, you are GOOD. I owe you a beer and a shot of whisky.

My favorite part is a) how the camera never actually focuses on his face, despite his being a famous actor, and b) how in the one bit where it looks like he's center shot and the camera would be focused on him, the neck of Duncan's horse COMPLETELY blocks him. He doesn't even get a good death scene in the ensuing massacre.

Tip of the tricorner hat to you and Christy!

I, too, have been looking for Colm Meaney in the movie for years. Couldn't find him when I had the VHS version, then still couldn't find him on the expanded DVD version. When I bought my new HD capable flatscreen, I indeed found him in 5 scenes during the march to Fort William Henry where Magua turns on them. The last scene is where he gets shot by an indian who looks like Magua from behind.

That was fun.
