On top of everything else...

Estelle Getty goes and dies on us. She was 84 and had been ill for some time.

The kinds of nostalgic family associations that most people have for old TV shows -- I pretty much only have that for "The Golden Girls." I don't watch much TV but I will always watch that if it's on. And all the actresses have done such noble work elsewhere -- Betty White in "Lake Placid," Rue McClanahan in "Starship Troopers," and of course, Bea Arthur in the Star Wars Holiday Special. As for Ms. Getty, you will of course remember her as the owner of the crucial department store in "Mannequin."

Really? Estelle Getty was in Mannequin? This seems like the perfect excuse for me to finally watch that.

(I always think I've seen Mannequin, but I'm pretty sure I'm just confusing it with a young-adult novel where some kids run away to live in a mall and hide by posing as mannequins during shopping hours. I love that sort of novel.)

You've NEVER seen Mannequin?! Oh, you must at once! I recommend watching it late at night with a large and merry group, if you can manage that. Kim Cattrall plays a reincarnated Egyptian mummy in the form of a department-store mannequin, who only comes to life when she's alone with Andrew McCarthy. See, the plot is almost as good as your young-adult novel's. If that's a real book, I want to read it.

Mannequin! yes! LOVE that movie. How in the world did Andrew McCarthy afford that awesome loft apartment as an artist? 20 years and I still wonder about that....
